The prosthetics and orthotics firm based in Jackson, TN known as Human Technology Inc., and its associates Murphy’s Orthopedic & Footcare, Greer Orthotics & Prosthetics, and Hi-Tech Prosthetics & Orthotics were impacted by a data breach that was discovered on March 15, 2024.
An investigation by Human Technology was started to determine the origin of anomalous system activity. A digital forensics company was involved in the investigation, which was concluded on or about May 31, 2024. Based on the results, an unauthorized individual acquired access to a computer network employed by Human Technology and its affiliates and possibly accessed or stole patient information. The breached information included names, birth dates, addresses, health data, medical insurance details, Social Security numbers, passport numbers, driver’s license numbers, expiry dates/payment card numbers, routing numbers, account numbers, and tax IDs.
In compliance with HIPAA, notification letters were sent to the impacted persons on June 28, 2024, and free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services were provided to the impacted people. Human Technology stated it has not received any report of misuse of the impacted data. To enhance security and minimize the possibility of the same occurrences later on, Human Technology has applied extra safety measures, which include EDR monitoring.
